[12/1/13] While life's uncertainties continue to be their uncertain selves, i've taken the opportunity afforded by a portable job to spend a sunny winter in Tucson, Arizona. Welcomed by the local dance community, i'm excited to announce my first gig west of the rockies, calling Tucson's annual gender-free contra in January. Pending more concrete plans from my company, i may be settled in the southwest for a while - and if so, look forward to a west coast tour 2014! More news in early January.
Taking up classical violin in my late teens, i stumbled upon the joys of traditional music. Twasn't long after that friends dragged me to my first contradance at a grange hall in the woods of central Maine. As fiddler and bandleader, i cofounded the Bangor, Maine series, and energized by an open mic experience at the 2006 Ralph Page Dance Legacy Weekend, i began actively calling at regular dances and special events around central Maine in 2007. Since moving to Boston in 2011, i've been working with clarinetist Rebecca Bosworth-Clemens, pianist Amy Englesberg and others to form the band Pilot Light, and stepping up my calling schedule in Massachusetts and beyond. In 2012 i led over thirty dances - at regular series, private events, and festivals - in MA, NH, ME, VT, CT, NY, MD, PA, NC, and FL; in 2013, i added GA and SC to that list. Peers praise the clear, confident voice and presence i bring to the stage. Dancers note a bent for intriguiging choreography choices, from stately to salacious to synchronously stomptastic. On stage or off, for me the experience is about coming together as a community, about inclusivity, the "aha" moment of dances with surprising flow, and - most of all - about finding those moments of perfect synergy when the dancers and music become an organic whole. I still do music, too! Here's a clip of yours truly laying down the dance trance with my friends, internationally-acclaimed pianist Neil Pearlman and ace fiddler Audrey Knuth, 10/6/12 in Buffalo, NY. Skilled at playing the lead, i'm even happier when i can sandwich myself right in the middle and find the harmonies and grooves that only a second fiddle can.
